From Volunteer to Dog Mum

Read on to discover our amazing volunteer’s experience from caring for animals at Farmica to falling in love with one special puppy.

Hi, I’m Jessy, 27 years old, and adopting a dog has been my biggest dream for as long as I can remember.

I was looking for a furry companion to join me on my van life adventures, but none of the dogs I met felt 100% right. At least until Aura walked into my life. Or rather… jumped into my van, curled up on me, and decided that she was adopting me. From that moment on, she never left my side.

At first, I had to tell myself not to fall in love with her, because she was already reserved… but I failed miserably. So when the reservation was cancelled, I didn’t hesitate for a second. I said I would adopt her immediately, and it became one of the happiest moments of my life.

Since then, Aura has already been on her first little adventure with me to Snoopy, a dog shelter in Pula right by the beach. She’s still a little anxious sometimes, but she is absolutely perfect. Everyone here already adores her, and she even had her very first swim in the sea and her first bath recently, which she loved! And even though raising a puppy and working at the same time can get a bit overwhelming at times, I cherish every moment of getting to know her better and deepening our bond day by day.

Next up on our travel plans are: meeting friends and family in Germany, helping me build a house with other volunteers in Sweden, travelling through Norway and staying in a little cottage with my friends in the UK… and I feel so lucky to have my best four-legged friend by my side during each second of these experiences. Until she’ll become a true student dog in October when I go back to university and she can meet and play with all the wonderful dogs of my friends.

I love her more than words can say and feel incredibly lucky to have her by my side – hopefully all the way until I’m over 40, through graduation, family life, and countless adventures.

Aura is one of six puppies we found abandoned in a box by our gate. Tora has since been adopted too and is thriving in her new home, but Ana, Rebecca, Merida, and Toni—just as beautiful and full of personality—are still waiting for someone to see them and fall in love.
